Sib,— l was fairly taken aback last night by reading an article in the " Evening Post" . in which the writer insinuates that Mr Fitzherbert will oppose the Government. Now I heard Mr Fitzherbert at tho Hutt say most distinctly that he would not, and I extract the following from the report of his speech which appeared in the '•Evening Post" itself! 'He had beon asked. whether, if elected, 'he would oppose the present Government. . . . Ab long as they adopted and carried his policy, he was willing they shonld remain in offioe. He had. heretofore given the Government a very generous support, for it was generous to stand by and sco others selling your goods, and putting the proceeds into their pockets. Their so-called great polioy was a polioy he had promulgated long before they did, yet he had assisted them to shape it into form, and had during tho session coached them along. It was he and others who had. moulded the soheme into something, like shape, and surely, it was generous of the originators of the policy to assist those who had appropriated it. Had he and those acting with him liked, they could, by a large majority, have oarried the soheme in its present Bhape in opposition to the. shape io which .the Government originally brought it in. . . . . .
