DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The writ for the Superintendenoy election has been returned as informal. The last escort brought down 19,237 ozs. The yield of gold for the year shows an increase of 20,000 ounoes over the last two years. Seven boys represent the Otago Cadets at the oolonial firing. The Southland representatives scored— Thomson, 45; Brown, 40; Oraigh, 40 (all from Invercargill) ; Eobinson (Eiyerton),4o. We have been favored by the Government with the following telegrams :— Taubanga, 2nd January. The natives are quiet in all parts of thii district, and well satisfied with the present state of things. The Whangamata murder turns out to be a mere drunken squabble between the natives ; no lives lost. Pene Taka Tuwea, of Whakamarama, is here. He says that he is determined that none of his people shall join in any disturbance that may take place. He had not heard anything of j the rumored murder of the telegraphist at Alexandra. No communication as yet with Auckland or Thames. W. Moule, Lieut.-Col. The Hon. D. M'Lean. Patea, 4th January. 10.30 a.m., two horsemen just arrived from Taranaki. They left New Plymouth at 9 a.m. on Monday. No further news from Mokau up to that hour. There is no excitement at Taranaki.
