For the Mount Ida Eaces Grand Stand Handicap of 100 sovereigns there was an exciting race. Southern Chief, 1 ; Misfortune, 2 ; Backbiter, 3. Handicap — Atlas, 1 ; Misfortune, 2; Pretender, 3. Cup— Southern Chief, 1; Backbiter, 2j Foretop, 3. The Governor congratulates the Superin* tendent on the extension of the telegraph to Botorua. The Duke of Edinburgh says he would be glad to visit Otago, but his orders are imperative to leave for England direct early in January.
