LATEST TELEGRAMS.

■» [From Our Own Correspondents.] ! NAPIER, Wednesday. News was received this morning from Waikaremoana that the Hauhaus have retired to the extreme corner arm of the lake. They are said to be 100 strong, principally Ureweras. All tbeir women have been sent away. Te Waru and party bolted to Mangapowhatu. Hamlin has opened communication and made proposals to them to surrender. The only thing that prevents them doing so is the dread of being killed by the Wairoa natives. Hamlin gave them until Monday last to surrender. If they have not done so by that time he will attack them. All the lake districts and settlements are in our hands. When the messenger left Waikaremoana a boat was seen approaching, it is expected with the intention of concluding terms of surrender. A Constabulary man named Stark deliberately shot himself yesterday with his revolver through the breast close to the heart. He is still living, and likely to recover. OTAKI, Wednesday. The following private telegram was handed to us yesterday for publication by the Eev. Father Petit Jean :— Our mill at Waitobu (Otaki) was destroyed by fire on the 13th instant. Have it published in the papers that the white people may know our misfortune. — Yours respectfully Tonihi.
