COLONIAL RIFLE CONTEST.
-»- The annual colonial competition for the championship of the colony and the usual prizes offered by the General Government has been going on in Dunedin during the last three days. The following is a list of the various competitors, the districts they represent, and the scores which they made in the local competitions for choice of representatives, and which entitled them to go to Dunedin : — ■
The above scores were all made at 400, 500, and 600 yards, five shots at each range. We are not yet in possession of the full scores, but those of the winners of the various events have reached us by telegraph, and are as follows :— FIEST DAY. Weather cold and wet ; showers of rain and sleet. Judging Distance Phizes.— At such, distances, not exceeding 600 yards, as may be appointed by the officer in command of the firing party ; 5 shots in the whole to be fired by each competitor, who will judge his own distance; maximum points, 20; no prize to be given for a less score than 13 points. Ist prize, £9 ; 2nd prize, £8 ; 3rd nrize, £7.
Highest Wellington score— Halse, 15. Ist Set of Phizes. — At ranges of 300, 400, 500 yards ; 5 shots at each range ; maximum points 60 ; no prize to be given for a less score than 40 points ; position at 300 yards, kneeling. Ist prize, £9 ; 2nd prize, £8 ; 3rd prize, £7. Ist — Hazard (Thames) 44 3nd— Wilson (Otago) 44 3rd— Moore (Nelson) 42 Highest Wellington score — Halse, 41.
SECOND DAY. Weather fine and calm. 2nd Set of Pkizes. — At ranges of 400, 500, 600 yards ; 7 shots at each range ; maximum points, 84 ; no prize to be given for a less score than 56 points. Ist prize, £40 and N.E.A. silver medal; 2nd prize, £30 and silver medal ; 3rd prize, £20.
THIED DAY. 4th Set, Eunning- Pbizes.— At a range of 200 yards. Time— s minutes, to commence at first shot ; competitors to come loaded, but not capped, to the firing point ; at the word " Commence," to cap and fire ; after every two shots, the competitor to carry his rifle, ammunition, rod, and everything lie makes use of in firing, round a post 50 yards off, loading when he likes, but not capping, until he arrives at the firing point ; no assistance whatever permitted. Ist prize, £9 ; 2nd prize, £8 ; 3rd prize, £7.
sth Set op Phizes— fob Kapidity. — A u ranges of 200 and 300 yards. Time, three minutes as each range, to commence at first shot, as in the 4th set. No assistance whatever permitted. Ist prize, £9 ; 2nd prize, £8 ; 3rd prize, £7.
6th Set— Consolation Phizes. — At ranges of 200 and 300 yards. Five shots at each range. Maximum points, 40. No prize will be given for s less score than 27 points. Eange, 200 yards— position, standing. Eange, 300 yards— position, knoeling. To be fired for by those competitors only who have not succeeded in winning any prize in the previous five sets. Ist prize, £5 ; 2nd prizo, £4 10s; 3rd prize, £4; 4th prize, £3 10a ; sth prize, £3 ; Gth prize, £2 10s ; 7th prize, £1 10s.
The Champion Belt, Gold Medal, and the sura of £40, goes to the highest aggregate scorer in the Ist, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and sth sets. This year tho fortunate Champion is Lieut. Goldie, of the Port Chalmers Naval Brigade, whose score was 180. There were special prizes for Cadets, each Cadet corps sending one representative, but , none of those sent succeeded in making the 1 required minimum score. 1 This is the fourth year that Otago has • taken the Champion belt. The prizes are to be presented in DunI edin to-day, and the Northern competitors will leave for home on Tuesday. For the benefit of home readers it may be stated that j the Government provides a free passage to and fro for the competitors, and allows them r 10a per day each, daring detention at the place of firing.
