COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.
Melbourne. — The "Argus" of the 2<tth reports : — ln tho import markets business to-day bas not been marked by any signs of returning activity. In breadatuffs almost all the trade done has gone through the auction mart, and at the various sales held, full quotations were realized. Flour was disposed of at £13 5s to £13 7s 6d. Victorian wheat was at the same time placed at 6a to 6s 2-fd., while one lino of 4000 bushels of Port MncDonnell realised 6s 3d., delivered on the wharf. Trade purchases of flour continue to bo made privately at £14 to £14 55., and even up to £14 10s is asked. Oatg are quite neglected, and only at a slight decline can sales be effected ; we hear of a parcel of 2,500 bushels having been quitted at about 3s lOd to 3s lid. Maize is moved off freely at 4s sd. Bran i 3 very scarce. Candles command no attention ; the sales at auction amounted to 1,500 boxes, or thereabouts, at prices ranging from lOfd to lOJ-d for damaged. Sugars are in brisk request ; we hear of some 2,000 mats having been sold in parcels at from £33 10s for low counters, to £42 103 for fine yellow brewing crystals. We understand thafc owing to some difficulty with the insurance offices, the Lilly cannot go on to New Zealand, as it was the intention of the purchasers she should do when her cargo was bought, but will discharge here. We learn, however, that a hundred tons of the Helen's cargo of sugar will, in the meantime, be "sent away to Dunedin instead. Sales of currants are effected at 4d. A small invoice of candied peel was closed for at 13d. Malt is still saleable in moderate parcels, at 10s. Boiler plates are rising more into favor. Wo learn of the sale of 120 tons, chiefly to arrive on terms withheld, but which it is stated show a very strong upward tendency on tho market. Fine tens tobaccoes meet with a ready sale. About 230 packages, Two Seas and Venus tens, ex Eurynome, the only shipmeut left in first hands, has been disposed of at a very full figure. Salt is being run off very freely, and as stocks held are rapidly diminishing, holders have resolved to raise their asking rates to £6. The stock of good fine salt has run very low.
