beach, designated by courtesy the course which was in as heavy a Btate as could well be imagined. The first evpnfc was — TUB HURDLE RACK. For this race five horses weroentored, nnd three hurdles, three feet six inches high, wore erected. The racing was very good, and the stakes were won by Mr H. M\Ewen's Sam; M'llvride's Farrier coming in second. HUTT CAVALBY EACE. There were six horses entered for this event which was won by Mr Knight's Volunteer ; Mr Back's Doctor coming in second. PETONI STAKES. For this event five horses were entered ; the race was well contested, and the stakes were carried off by Mr John Fagan's Pat ; Mr Burt's Ginger being close to his heels. THE HACK EACE. There were eleven horses entered for the hack race but the contest was really between two hacks, that belonging to Mr H, Donald carrying off the prize. HANDICAP EACE, This was won by Volunteer, D. Hastings Distiny coming in second. PONY BACE. This was a race for a silver cup, presented by Mr George Pike, of the "Travellers Rest Inn," Taita ; and it was won by Mr Harris' Taita, against eight other competitors. Foot races and other rural sports followed including two war dances, which were perhaps the most interesting of the events of the day. Mr Campion of the Cavalry Corps officiated as steward ; Mr Oakes as starter ; and Mr Cudby as Clerk of the cource. There were two booths on the ground, which did a most roaring business, but no accidents of any consequence occurred.
These races, which were exceedingly wellattended, came off on Petoni beach, as per arrangement, and it was estimated that there were 500 persons present, one third of whom were on horseback. There was in fact a great number of very fine horses on the
