HOKITIKA.

By the s.s. Eangitoto we have our files from the West Ceast to the 26th inst. We take the following items from the West Coast Times of that date : — THE CHANNEL COMMITTEE. The Channel Committee held a meeting yesterday afternoon at half-past four o'clock, at the Borough Council Chambers. His Worship the Mayor (in the chair) and the following gentlemen were present, Messrs Button, White, Spence, Boyle, Macfarliine, Fisher, Ecclesfield, Evans, and the Town Surveyor. After considerable discussion as to the best measures to be taken, the Committee adjourned to the south spit, and there decided upon the the most desirable spot ( through which to cut a channel, situation fixed upon is near where the first channel was successfully out, and it was determined to commence the work at daylight this morning, the town crier being sent round to invite the attendance oi the necessary laborers. THE WEATHER. The weather, which has been remarkably* fine for some time past, underwent a change on Tuesday evening, which although far from agreeable to pedestrians in town, will be most heartily welcomed by those engaged in mining, whose operations have been greatly impeded, and in some cases discontinued, through want of water. On Tuesday evening the rain commenced and con» tiuued to fall steadily, throughout the night. Yesterday morning the weather cleared for a shorttime, but some smart showers fell during the day and as evening came on the rain descended heavily with every prospect of its continuance. It is hoped by many that the wet weather will continue for some days, aud that the rain will fall in such quantity as to cause a fresh in the river of sufficient forco to cut a wide and deep channel, and thus facilitate th<j ingress and egress of shipping to and from the river.
