THE HOUSE BURNING AT WAIKANAE.
(to the editor op the independent.) Waikanae, Sepfc, 28, 1868. Sib, — Seeing two paragraphs in your paper ol the 26th, one headed "The Hauhaus at Waikanae," and the other " The Waikanae Natives," where you say t)aat an outrage was committed at Waikanae, burning Mr Jenkins' house. I beg leave to Btote that Mr Jenkins had no house at the Hurue, nor has he had any there since he sold his old ono to Mr T. Tolford, some five years ago. He wanted to build another house on the same land as the old one, which is Maori ground, and we objected to it, not because ho would not give up hiu daughterß to us, but for reasons best known to himself. He fenced in part of the land after having been warned not to do bo several times. So the Maoris burnt the fence, and not the house. There is not the slightest fear or danger of a native rebellion here. It is only a few suoh men as old Tuari that makes the natives think so badly of the pakeha. — I am, &c, Jomrarc Wadb, A Native.
