EARTHQUAKES IN NEW ZEALAND.
Two sharp shocks of earthquake were felt in Wellington on the morning of the 17th. The motion of the first shock was from east to west, aud in a few seconds was followed by another with a transverse motion. The following telegrams furnished by the Government will show that the pulsation was general throughout New Zealand. Napier, 9.55 a.m. — Two alight shocks ; direction N. to S. Waipukurau, 9.55 a.m. — Very strong shock. Castle Point, 9.56 a.m.— Very strong shock, from S. to N. Greytown, 9.55 — Severe shock. Fcatherston, 9.55 — Do. White's Bay, 9.55— D0. Do, 9.56J — A second shock. Blenheim, 9.ss— Severe shock. Kaiapoi, 9.57 — Severe shock, from N. to S. Christchurch, 9.s6.V— Strong shock, from E. toW. Lyttelton, 9.s7— Strong shook, N. to S., with oscillation of tide. Hokitika, 9.58 — Violent shock; also felt at Greymouth. Port Chalmers, 9.55 — No shock, but oscillation of tide still going on. _ | Nelson, 9.57— Tw0 smart shocks, so severe, it was deemed prudent by the operator to leave the office, got into the road and felt live or six distinct wares from E. to W.
