Swindling. — A remarkable case of swindling has ocourred in England, and the perpetrator, Patrick Murray, a private in the 12th Regiment, recently stationed at the Eaglan Barracks, ia being pursued by the police. Murray obtained the cheque-book of tho paymaster of the regiment, '- Lieut. Gibbs, and forged cheques to the extent* of near £120. To one tradesman he re^a&ledf^J that he had a considerable sum due services in New Zealand ; lie then ranlof#TOM^l I with him for £50, and gave a forged cheque in : full discharge" of the debt. From a jeweller he gob £40 worth of goods, and a third tradesman he swindled to the extent of £10, getting the amount in two five pound notes as "small change" for a cheque. He afterwards bought two pair of boots on credit and absconded. .'"■' Gold. — In our last issue we mentioned that a small quantity of gold had been found in the Waitotara. Since then we are in receipt of a day's later Wanganui papers.
