LAYING POISON.

(to the editor op thb independent.) Chatham Islands, March 4, 1868. Sib, — Will you kindly spare a apace in you* paper for the following. There is a large flat in Waitangi partly rented by the Government and partly by private individuals. Captain Thomas, the Resident Magistrate, has given orders (of which ho gave the public one day's notice only) to hate poison laid there, which was done, and a valuable dog belonging to Mr Ackland, one of our most respectable sheep farmers was the first victim. The poison was laid on land, rented by y^, the Government, which is a common thoi&igsilf| fare and not fenced in, or is there a nptice'ifc^rdii^ up. Captain Thomas might have made the^HMl|l|§ haus fence this in before they fenced in his own private property called the Tiki Tiki. Children play about this ground who might chance to get poisoned ; there are also cattle, horses, &c on it. I appe&l to the New Zealand publio — was this legal, and even if it was so, is it not totally unnecessary. — Your's, &c. Justitia.
