DUNEDIN.
Wednesday. Yesterday in the Provincial Council an addition to the reply to the Superintendent's address was moved. The address recommends the appointment of a Select Committee to consider the subject of "Hundreds," while the proposed addition affirmed that the necessity for " Hundreds" was so apparent that no Committee was needed at all to consider the question. The Government looked upon the proposal as a want of confidence motion. On being pressed to a division, 17 voted for the motion, and 17 against it. The motion was then negatived by the casting vote of the Speaker. The Government then moved an adjournment of the House. A reconstruction of the Executive is deemed probable. Messrs Driver, Birch, and Grant were nominated to-day for the Mayoralty. Mr Besserneres, the publisher of the Dunedin Evening News, has been committed for trial, for an alleged malicious and defamatory libel published in tlmfc journal. The information was laid by Mr Iteeves, cordial manufacturer, and Mr Murphy, the proprietor of the Shamrock Hotel, who allege that in an article on Fenianism published in the News, they are referred to as Fenians.
