TRIAL OF HENRY J. O'FARRELL.
O'FARRELL CONDEMNED to DEATH.
By the s.s. Rataia we hare later advices from Sydney to the Ist inst. His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh was to leave Sydney, direct for England,.on the 4th inst. The Duke was anxious to come to New Zealand, but his medical advisers strongly recommended a voyage home. O'Farrcll has been tried, found guilty, and sentenced to death. It was rumored that the Duke had interceded for the life of the prisoner O'Farrell, but it was considered necessary by the Government that the law should take its course. The Sydney Umpire of the 31st ult. says : —" His Royal Highness himself drove out his four greys yesterday afternoon, at 4 o'clock. The Duke took his usual drive down the South Head Road. He was accompanied by Dr Young and his equerries. It is quite gratifying to note that so sensible is his Royal Highness of the loyalty and affection of the people of this colony, that he again trusts himself unreservedly amongst I them, as was his wont before the foul attempt f was made on his life at Clontarf. The cxi traordinary guard around Government House s has been discontinued, the only force there being the military usual before the 12th March. We understand that Saturday next has been definitely fired upon as the date of his Royal Highness's departure, and that he will sail direct to England.
