Dunedin. — The Otago Daily Times, in its commercial summary for Europe, says —
Tho demand for local wants is usually at this time slacker than at any other part of tho year, and it has happened during tho last few weeks, that outside requirements have been very limited ; and though at Intervals first holders have evinced a disposition to do business at conceded rates, sales to any extent have not been induced, and the total of importers' transactions has been light. In consequence of the prevailing quietude, markets close Avith less of firmness than they previously possessed, and quotations for staples, though almost stationary, are in some cases, only bo in tho absence of operations to guide. Values of breadstuffs are quoted as follows — South Australian flour, £14 ; Provincial, Duncan's Water of Leith Flour Mills, £10 10s ; Duncan's Steam Flour Mills (Anderson and Mouat), £10 10s; oatmeal, £18 10s ; new Patna rice, £30; wheat, 4s 2d to 4s 4d ; oats, 2s 3d to 2s 4d ; barley, 4s 3d; pressed chaff, £0 ss; bran, Is. Ales and beers are placed at tho following prices — For new brew ales, guaranteed, £6 to £6 17s Gd ; Machin's stout, 9s 3d to 9a 6d ; Blood's, 9s to 9s 3d ; Byass's, (3s 9d ; Guiness's, 9s ; Tennent's ale, guaranteed, 10s ; Arrol's, 9s to 9s 3d ; other good brands, 8s to 8s 6d, in bond, 9s 3d. Tho fellowing are the quoted values of teas and sugars in bond. Teas — For low congous, lOd to Is ; ordinary sorts, Is 3d to Is 4d ; good ordinary to medium, Is 5d to Is 8d ; good medium, Is 9d to 2s ; finer descriptions, 2s to .2s 4d ; extra fino, 2s 5d to 2s 9d ; gunpowder, 2s 2d to 2s 6d ; fine young hyson, 2s »Jd; pekoos, 2s 3d to 2s 6d. Sugars — Finest white crystals, £38 to £40 ; second whites, £36 to £38; good yollows and greys, £34 to £36 ; fine counters, £32 to £34 ; second counters, £30 to £31 ; brown sorts, SJifl to £29 ; English loaf, 6d to 6£d ; ditto, crushed, s£d ; Dutch crushed, (none) ; Victorian refined, No 1 white, £43 10s ; ditto, No 2, £41 10s ; counters, £38 10s. Canterbury. — The Lyttelton Times of Monday reports — In the grain market to-day there was more animation than usual, but it had no effect on prices. We still quote -wheat 3s Gd per bushel, barley 3s to 3s 6d and oats 2s to 2s 3d per bushel. Superfine flour from £12 to £14 per ton ; bran, £4 ; and sharps, £5 per ton. Q-ood hay, £4 per ton. Messrs Wilson and Alport report a brisk market sale on Saturday, tho supplies being good and prices improving. About 30 head of cattle were yarded, and, with a very fow exceptions, sold at satisfactory prices. Milch cows, fair to good quality, brought £7 ; two-year old heifers, £7 15s to £10 5s ; do, nine* to fifteen months old, £3 17s 6d to £6 ; two-year old steers, £6 to £7 5s ; ton months do, £4 to £4 15s ; 82 pigs sold at fair rates ; fowls, 4s to 43 6d per couple ; carcase pigs, 3£d to 3Jd per lb ; fowls' wheat, 2s Gd to 2a 9d per bushel, bacon, 5d per lb.
SrDNEY. — Telegrams from Sydney, dated the 12th inst, say —
Breadstuffs are firmer. Candles, 10£ dto lid. A small portion of the Madonna's cargo of sugar was sold at from £26 to £33 15s, and the balance was withdrawn for higher rates. Sales of lobsters have been made at 6s 5d ; oysters, 83 6d ; hysonekin, lOd. Tallow is £1 lower.
Adelaide. — October 12 — The corn market is Tory firm. 15,000 bushels of wheat have been sold at ss. There is no change in flour.
Melbourne. — Tho Argus, of the 14th instant,

In the import markets the week has been closed with very little appearance of activity or animamation, owing in some degree to the continued absence of the mail steamship, which has been looked for for some days past. The market for breadstuff's maintains an aspect of great firmness. A parcel of Victorian flour has been placed at £12 10s. Sales of maize ure now made nfc 3a 2d, thus confirming the advance sought to bo established. Transactions in tobacco evince a very steady market. A shipment of 100 boxes of Venus tons has been disposed of at Is 3d. Wo learn of a parcel of 100 cases of Q-ail Borden's condensed milk, eagle brand, having been placed at 15s. Malt goes into the hands of the trade at up to 9s 6d for small parcels. Candles have ycceded in value, lid having been accepted for brands which holdors refused to quit at the end of last week under Hid. In liquids brandy still attracts notice, and prices aro somewhat hardening ; we hear of an offer of 63 3d made for a parcel of Martoll's pale having been refused.

"Wool Report. — Tho Home News waol report is as follows : — The third series of London public saleß of colonial wool opened on Aug. 18, Binoe when tho following quantities have been catalogued : 3134 bnles Sydney, 5172 Port Phillip, 727 Van Dienion'B Land, 1225 Adelaide, 5350 New Zealand, 2652 Caoo, and 158 sundries ; total, 18,418 bales. English buyers have attended in good numbers ; tho continent, however, hns been but thinly represented. Tho spirit is fair, and prices on a par wiih the cloning rates of tho preceding series. Tho position of the trade remains mucli the same aa il. has been for the last six months; some improvement is expoctod from a good harvest, for which the weather at the present moment ia favorablo, and Bhould it con«

The following are the arrivals in time for these sales : — 28,810 bales Sydney, 24,796 Port Phillip, 4866 Van Diemen's Land, 7143 Adelaide, 38,913 Now Zealand, 433 Swan Rivor, and 21,886 Cape ; total, 126,846 bales. To which have been added 20,000 bales held over from lust sales, bringing the total to be offered to about 150,000 bales.
The discount market remains unaltered, at lfc to If per cent. At the Bank there was scarcely any demand. On tho Stock Exchange the supply is very large, and loans on Government securities are offered to almost any amount at 1 per cent. Produce Markets. — Sugar : Full prices askod but small business doing ; refined steady ; brown lumps, 40s 6d. Coffee : Market dull, except for superior sorts, rates are looking down. Tea : Business to a fair extent, but value unaltered. Rice : Floating cargoes »f Arracan more in request for continent, at lls to lls 3d.
