Independent Office, October 19. The s.s. Rangitoto, Thos. J. Taverner, commander, arrived at the Bluff, this afternoon, at 4.22 p.m. She left Williamstown, at 1.30 p.m. on the 14th instant. The Bombayanchored in Hobson's Bay at 10.30 a.m. on the 14th instaut— one day behind due date. The cause of her non-arrival at her usual time was due to the P. & O. Company's steamer Surat grounding on a reef in the Red Sea, ninety miles from Suez. The mails and passengers were quickly transhipped to the P. & O. Company's steamer Nubia, but thousands of bales of cargo were thrown overboard from the Surat to lighten her. The prospects of saving her were favorable.
