WALTER TRICKER.
I (to the bditoe op thb independent.) Tutaenui, 4th, September. : Sic, — It is indeed a pity that your correspondent " D" should be ao extremely modest as not to sign his name to his valuable opinions on the Trieker case. They are about on a par with those of another gentleman residing near here, who had 11 greater opportunities of coming to a decision than any ono else could possibly have had." Still, all but three or four who obstinately refuse to believe facts, are of the same opinion as the Rev. A. Stock, and that is that Trieker is quite innocent of the murder of Rayner. I must remind "D." that condemnation of an innocent man also took place in London, even bo lately as 1865. I allude to the case of Pelizzoni, for the Saffron Hill Murder; so wo need not wonder at such a blunder and mistake being made in New Zealand. Now, when so many express theiropinion that agrave judicial error was committed in Tricker's case, surely it is not too much to ask that an enquiry should be made, and the mutter at once settled. Perhaps the half-caste could be found, and the truth come out ; probably his account was true — with two important alfcerations-r-that is, saying morning instead of night , and Trieker in placo of some other person. Indeed the whole affair was a blunder. Allowing the half-caste to change hU clothes when first a prisoner, and afterwards allowing him to be at liberty with his Mentor, Nepia, instead of confined as an accessory to the murder. By that means justice might have been done to the really guilty long ere this. I now trust that a proper enquiry will be held, and that in spite of the anonymous ecribblings of " Colonist," " X.," " D.," and othera, the right may prevail, and the efforts so generously made by Mr Stock and other real friends of the helpless mny prove successful, and a much-injured mau be again restored to liberty and home. Such will be the wish of every real lover of justice. — I am, &c, Henbf Lton.
