TOWN BOARD.
The Commissioners of the Town Board mot at their offices, Lambton Quay at three o'clock yesterday afternoon. There were present -.—Messrs Dransfield (Chairman), W. Bishop (Treasurer), Mantell, Pharazyn, and Q.uin. The minutes of the last meeting were read and ■ confirmed. FINANCIAL The Treasurer stated that the whole of the 'accounts passed on the last Board day had been paid, and that the balance in bank amounted to '£119 Os 4d. DEPUTATION TO THE SUPERINTENDENT. . The Chairman read a letter from Mr Knowles, informing the Board that the Superintendent •would, at one o'clock on the 27th instant, be happy to see the deputation appointed to wait on his Honor relative to the formation of Hunter and ITeatherston atreeta. BENEVOLENT SOCIETY. A letter from the Rev. P. Hay Maxwell, Hon. Secretary of the above Society, was read, and in xeply to an application contained therein it was Tesoived that the Board room shoull be put at the disposal of the Society for its weekly meetings. MULGRAVE STREET. , Complaints of the state of the drains in Mulgrave street having been submitted to the Board, the attention of the City Surveyor was directed to' the subject. MKTAI,. Several specimens of the metal taken from the quarries on Mount Victoria, were laid on the table. The Chairman stated that in accordance with a resolution passed on the last Board day, a specimen .had been submitted to Dr Hector, who reported that the rock possessed great coherence with considerable toughness, that it was but very slightly affected by hydrochloric acid, and was only feebly absorbent of water, and was altogether the beßt suited for road metal of any .yet used in this city. WILLIS STEEKT. The Chairman read a letter from Mr Tonks, jun., offering to keep the ruts filled in, on that •portion of Willis street between Mr D. Anderson's store and the Bank of New Zealand. The letter was ordered to be taken into consideration on the next Board day. THE CITY LAMPS. Mr Mills brought to the notice of the Board the manner in which the lamps of the city were lighted, and expressed a hope that the matter might be looked to, more especially a3 one of the •lamplighters had, while intoxicated, very nearly • severely injured a lady passing along the street. Mr Quin said that the conduct of the servants -of the Board was perfectly disgraceful, they being all given to drink. After some discussion the . matter dropped. ' petition. The Clerk read a petition, signed by fifty residents in Willis street, praying that the work of lowering the level of Willis street might be proceeded with at once. Messrs Port and Tolloy waited on the Board for a reply. Mr G. Hunlor did not consider that until the 1 cost of the work was known the prayer of the petition could be discussed. It w<is resolved that the City Surveyor should furnish an estimate of the cost on the next Board day. FIRE BRIGADE. Mr Quiu had an important motion to bring forward, and hoped it would be assented to as the Board subscribed £100 a year to the Volunteer Fire Brigade. That corps was in a most disorderly state and before more money was given it the Commissioners should inquire into the cause of the insubordination amongst its members. He would therefore move, "That a Sub-Com-mittee'bo appointed to inquire into the working v ©f the Fire Brigade, attend its meeting on Tuesday, and report next sitting day, such Committea to consist of Messrs Dransfield, Pharuzyn, and Quin." * Mr Hunter approved of the motion and said that owing to the insubordination of the Brigade the Insurance Agents had refused to give any further subscriptions until it was in a more orderly state. The motion was then carried. MURPHY STREET. Mr Pharazyn gave notice of his intention to move on the next Board day, " That in accordance with the City Surveyor's report of April 12, the Bum of £100 be expended in draining and otherwise improving Murphy street." THE CITY SURVEYOR. Mr Quin gave notico of his intention to move on next Board day " That in the opinion of the Commissioners the services of the present City Surveyor will not bo required after the end of August next." Mr Pharazyn considered it only fair to Mr ' Skeet that some definite charges against him should be adduced in order to give him an opportunity of rebutting them. Mr Quin intimated his intention of bringing forward some charges which he could prove. ' MARKET RESERVE. It was resolved that the sale by auction of the ■Market Reserve advertised for the 12th August should be postponed for a month, and that the Market Hall, should, in the meantime, bo converted into a store for metal. No other business of importance was transacted and tho Board adjourned till Friday next.
