LATEST FEOM AUCKLAND.
The following succinct report of Mr Stafford's reply to Mr Yogel on Tuesday last, appears in the Auckland Humbug : — Mr Stafford said he had listened to his hon. friend's speech, which was one of the most perspicuous and logical addresses he had ever heard, wifch much pleasure, and ifc would have fully convinced him of tho error of his ways had he been actuated by the motives supposed. But it was entirely a mistake to suppose that he disliked provincialism ; on the contrary, he had spent hia political life in the endeavor to strengthen the powers of the provinces, and to reduce the General Government to its proper level. He had not delegated the powers to Mr Macandrew, because he greatly esteemed that gentleman, and feared that his health would suffer Jf he had too muoh work to perform.

It was quite unnecessary for him to speak of his modesty, which was well known, or of his dislike to oflice, equally a matter of notoriety, and he could only say that if any misunderstandings had arisen through his having attempted to make . things pleasant, he very much regretted it. The same paper elsewhere informs us that Mr Carleton delivered a lively and entertaining speech on the occasion, which was listened to with much attention, especially by the ladies present. A petition has been signed by nine Residents (five of whom are under ten years of age) of Stafford Town, Auckland, praying the Assembly to abolish provincial instituI tions. :
