The Rangatira from Napier arrived in this harbor last night, bringing papers to the 25th inst. A Volunteer Artillery Company is being formed at Hawke's Bay, His Honor the Superintendent being one of its chief supporters. The Rebels. — The Times of Thursday last says: — During the past few days it has been reported that the rebels under Tamihana collected on the south eastern part of this island were in force on the borders of this Province, near Porangaha/u, threatening a descent upon the town. We need scarcely say that the authorities have been on the alert — several massengers having been despatched in the direction of the reported camp for information, Init none of them had returned at the time of our latest enquiries yesterday afternoon. The steamer St. Kilda steamed for the Chatham Islands on Tuesday last with the Maori prisoners taken at Omaranui and elsewhere, and a guard of twenty men. — Times, October 25. I During the progress of hostilities, both on the East and West Coast, it has been observed that Europeans are occasionally seen in the ranks of the enemy. One of these, Newborry by name, has been found at Titiokura, and taken into custody by Lieut. -Colonel Whitmore. We have no question but the crime of which he has been guilty is one of the worst possible, and meriting more than others the capital sentence. Wo understand that this man .has given information respecting another, traitor, and that a warrant has been issued for his apprehension. The Petane correspondent of the Smoke's I Bay Times gives some further particulars of Major Eraser's expedition. It appears \ that in the skirmish described by last mail the loss on the part of the Hau Hans was 12 killed, 3 wounded, and two prisoners. \ Two others are believed to have fallen into j the river, but whose bodies have not been recovered. There were several horses laden with kits of ammunition, taken as loot. A party of volunteers left for Pakaraitai shortly after the engagement, returning at night, after having made a fruitless journey.
'BloteAW^thd'n^t place the fb?c* went to, but on their arrival itwftsdeserted, Te Haratoa had also been deserted, and at length, after Lieut.-Colonel Whitmoro had joined the forde, the end of the Hawke's Bay Province was reached. A very fine Hau-hau p ole was standing in the centre of apa there — the last pa in the Province ; and which had for its garrison one miserable looking old man, and one old woman. The pole was shot at by all hands, and was then cut down ; and thus ended this great expedition, which may not, however, be without its ' good results. It is reported that Mr. BusselTs men, staying six miles from Tangoio, had been fired at by natives. Captain Kennedy was recovering from his wound. One of the wounded Maori prisoners had died at Napier. The general tenor of the intelligence indicates that fighting for the time is over.
