WAIRABAPA.
(fbom a cobeespondent.)
Greytown, 22nd Oct., 1866. The Defence Minister passed through this township on Friday, on his way to Masterton. Some people say he comes for change o( air — others to see the natives and their doings. As tho Colonel returns to town to-day, and the natives are not at Masfccrton but near Greytown, I think his knowledge of native affairs in the Wairarapa will not be much increased.
On Saturday night it was reported that the Hau Haus intended to pass through this township on Sunday morning, and so on the strength of this report—" Wonder of Wonders " — orders were given for the Greytown Cavalry and Rifles to be ready at 8 a.m. to form an escort, and when they arrived at a convenient place to insisb on carrying their arms for them — Captain Donald's Cavalry and Carterfcon Volunteers assisting in the arrangement, Afc the time appointed, the Volunteers were ready, but the niggers bad changed their minds, and put in no appearance ; so unless they pay a visit to the people of , Napier or Major McDonnell tliey are not likely to get what they desire. In the Independent of the 20th, when speaking of the Wairarapa natives, you say they have allowed one of their number to be apprehended in the ordinary way, without offering any resistance. You are wrong. ! The Fcntheraton policeman went to Mohiki on Thursday with a warrant to apprehend a native named " Sam;" on his arrival at their camp he was ordered off afc once, and Sam remains at largo. Two persons riding towards Mohiki, yesterday — when on the Government road — were met by some natives and made to turn back. Your correspondent of the 11th will say, these reports are exaggerated, and have emanated from certain pakohas resident here, whose motives are apparently to irritate the natives, cause excitement, and appear "big," &c, &c. (Vide the correspondence of " Pakeha Manihera" in Independent 11th October.) [The statement " that the natives had allowed one of their number to be apprehended &c," was made on the authority of tho GroYernnient.— Ed. W, l.]
