Hia opponent was Mr. Alfred Saunders, the Superintendent of the Province, who was beaten by a majority of seven. PROFESSOR PARKER. This distinguished sw.ordsmnn and Miss Annie Beaumont are drawing bumper houses in Nelson. PLEASURE TRIP. The s.s. Thane, having on board sixty pas 6engers, made a most successful plea6ure trip to Croixelles Harbor. NEW JOURNAL. A demy daily paper is to be started in Nelson. It is to be called the Nelson Evening Mail, and the prospectus states that it will be a journal devoted to the mercantile interests of the Province. Messrs. R. Lucas & Co. are the proprietors. THE NELSON RACE MEETING. The Nelson Races come off on the 20t\\ and 21st inst. There are several very exciting events on the card, and heavy sums of public money have been given. The Maiden' and Town Plates are 100 soys. each, entrance £10, and the other races equally well worth winning. We notice that Mr. H. Stafford, Mr. 0 Curtis, Mr. Redwood, Mr.Empson, and many other gentlemen of New Zealand Racing celebrity have entered horaes. DISTRICT COXTET. The first sitting of the District Court was held at Nelson on the Ist instant, before Mr. C. D. R. Ward. There were no cases for hearing. " l
