COMMERCIAL.

" iNDErEXDEVT" Office, Friday Evening. Trade has received rather an impetus during the oiast month, and the market is moderately well supplied. Large quantities of Hour have come to hand lately, and the quotations are a trifle lower. The cargo of Chilian, ex Amalia, changed hands on arrival, at a price that has not transpired. Messrs. J. & T. Kebgell at the mills, quote as follows :

The season, though rather dry, has been favorable to the crops, and the market has been well supplied with fruit and vegetables. The hay crop too, has been very good, and was got in before the late rains. Large quantities of wool almost daily •arrive from the coast and up country stations, -and the first wool ship of the season, the Asterope Avith a large cargo, valued at ,6105,209 12s. 6d., left for London on the 29th ult. The next on the berth is the Adelaide Baker, which is fast filling up and will bo ready for sea at her advertised date. The ship Wild Duck, which nvrived on the 261h ulr., from London, with a large and miscellaneous cargo, has already discharged a considerable quantity, and cleared sufficient space in the hold for the reception of her homewards cargo. The first bale was taken •on board on Tuesday afternoon. The llutt Market was very well attended. Mr. J. 11. Homer sold a quantity of cattle and horses the former at from £8 to £8 10s. per head, und the latter at an averago of £18 per head.

We avc indebted to Me3si*3. J. M. Taylor & Co. for the following monthly commercial report :— Wellington, January 12fch, 1866. Notwithstanding the break caused by the 'Christmas holidays, we are glad to be able to note a special improvement in the business of the past month of a more than ordinary character. With some few exceptions all descriptions of goods aro quitted at payable rates, and as our stocks on hand are exceedingly moderate, and there is an absence of all over speculation we •may reasonably infer that a healthy state of trade is likely to predominate for some time to '-come. The cargoes of the James . Lister and Wild -Duck, proved welcome additions to our diminished stocks — in some instances suspiciously low — and quotations are retained at a more moderate figure than they otherwise would have been, had these vessels been longer delayed. Draught Ale and Porter is in moderate supply •at £7 10s. to £8 for Porter ; £8 10s. to £9 for Ale of esteemed brands; Bottled Beer 123. 6d. to 13s. 6d. per doz., duty paid. Brandy — Mnrtell's and Hennessy's, Bs. 3d. to Bs. 6d. per gallon, usual supply. JB.P. Rum 3s. 3d. to 3s. 9d.— stock. Geneva — J DKZ and Anchor bands — 13s. 6d. Wines — small enquiry. Tobacco and Cigars have been more enquired for lately, but the Targe stocks and heavy duty preclude any chance of much improvement in price. Good Twist is worth Is. Gd. to Is. 9d. and No. 2 Manila, Havannah-shaped cigars, 50s. to 553, Sugai*s have advaiiced from £3 to £5 per ton, on our last quotations, and show evident signs of retaining their rise. The stocks of Mauritius sugars are light, and there is good enquiry for all the sorts required for preserving purposes. Teas are dull, and stocks more than sufficient, to meet the demand, which cannot be forced by low prices. Good Congou, 2s. 7d. to 2s. 9d. Cofl'eo— Manila, 14d. per Ib. Plantation do., J6d. Flour.— Arrivals of Chilian flour from Otago have caused a decline in price, and it is now •worth £22 to £23 per ton. There is an increasing demand for stnlion supplies at this period of the year which will prevent any material fall below present quotations, and we think it more than probable that prices will rule higher in another month. Colonial Produce. — Corned butter Is. Gd. to Is. GJd. " - ■ Sperm Candles have advanced in price and arc now worth Is. l£d. for Price's No. 1. Soap. — There has been some little improvement done in this article within the last few days in consequence of the rise that lias taken place in the adjacent Colonies, and it is now quoted at 425. to 445. per ewt. Colonial Produce. — Tallow, mutton, £28 to £30 per ton ; tallow, beef, £23 to £28 per ton ; tallow, mixed, £27 to £29 per ton ; hides, salted, wet, 9s. to 128. each ; hides, sun dried, 2s. to 3s. each ; wool, greasy, 7d. to 9d. ; wool fleece, Is. to lid. .
