It is told of a well-known American map agent, that on a recent trip ho was attacked by highway robbers, who demanded his money. Being more prudent than to carry money in the country, they failed in making a haul. " But," said our Yankee, " I have some splendid maps of the country along with me, which I would like to show you ;" and in a twinkling he was off his horse, had a map stuck up on a pole, and explained it so effectually, that ho sold each of the banditti a map, pocketed the money, and resumed his journey. Highland Mode of Detecting the Cattle Disease. — A correspondent of the Dundee Courier states that in 1814, when the cattle disease raged in Caithness- shire, the following mode of discovering the animals affected was resorted to : — A peat five was kindled, and leather burned upon it. The cattle wore then made to move round itfwhen such as were affected commenced sneezing and coughing, with matter coming out at their nostrils. Our correspondent says he has seen this mode tried on the Ord of Caithness, when 300 cattle passed through the ordeal, and the diseased ones were separated from the Bound,
