Dranafield, Esq., Treasurer ; Messrs. Borlase, Bishop, Jacki,MiUs, Plimmer, and Quin. The minuteß of the last meeting were read and confirmed. COEEESrONDJNCB. The Chairman read a letter from Messrs. J. and H. Barber, asking for six weeks' grace after the 14th inst., in order to allow, time to put up a slaughter-house at Ngahauranga, and applying for a license to slaughter in their present promises until then. It was decided that no license could be granted, but the Clerk was directed to intimate to the applicants that the Board would not prosecute. The Chairman then read a letter from Mr. B. H. Morrow, applying for drainage from his premises. Also, one from the Under Secretary con> taining' copies of coreapondence the Overseer of the General Government Domains and the General Government on the subject of the drainage of the Government Domain. One of the enclosures contained a request to have a brick drain made from Hill-street through the Domain, for the formation of which the cost was to be divided between, the Town Board and the General and Provincial Governments. After some discussion Mr. Borlase moved, " That the Wellington Town Board does not feel justified in expending the public money in con* structing brick drains through the Government lands unless the preservation of the public health requires its interference. In this caso the Town Board, considering its means and the many urgent calls upon its funds, does not think it advisable to advance any money to assist the Government in making brick drains through the Government property." Carried. TENDERS. Messrs. Alexander and McDonald forwarded a tonder to make the culvert from Dickson-street to Manners-street at the back of the Market Hall for £12 12s. per chain. Messrs. Corney and Lindiner also sent in a tender of £9 18s. per chain for the • wne work which was acccepted. GENEBAI, BUSINESS. It was determined that notice should be given to all persons to remove obstructions and nui« sanccs on the East Bide ef Lambton Quay. HEALTH OFFICER. Mr. Borlase moved, " That for the purposes of the Act, the Clerk of the Board be appointed Health Officer." Carried. •' ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were then presented and passed : — Month's wages and labor... £106 6 0' Painting, &c 16 0 0 Furniture, &c 22 13 0 Tools and quarter's account 12 5 7 Salary of City Surveyor and Clerk 39 0 0 Tho Chairman informed the Board that the expenses for the past month absorbed the balance in hand, and mentioned that the expenses for guarding the prisoners, together with tobacco for them, amounted to £33 16s. The Treasurer stated that he had received £350 from tho Provincial Government, which Bum was made up by £250 due to the previous Board, and £100 on account of the £1,000 granted by Hig Honor the Superintendent. Two smaller accounts received made the total £373 23. 6d., of which there only remained a balance in hand of £165 6s. 3d. Application was then directed to be made for £200 from tho Provincial Government. SEWERAGE AND DRAINAGE. Mr. Drnnsfiold pointed out the great importance of a careful consideration of this subject. He considered that the Provincial Government should assist the Board, as the necessary outlay would bo very groat, and suggested as a preliminary measure that a report should bo made on tho drainage of the city. Mr. Quin thought that if a main drain were constructed, each house should bo connected with it by moans of pipes. After a few remarks from tho Chairman rela* tive to that part of the " Act" in which it was laid down that a map of the drainage, &0., should be made to a particular scale, viz., 60 inches to the mile, Mr. Bishop thought that this City might hare a similar sewerage to that of Christchurch. The Chairman explained that that City had s convenient place for the deposit of all refuae on somo sand-hills. Moreover, the City Council there, had engaged a nightman to remove all re« fuse. Should such a system be introduced in this City there would be no place where it could ba thrown. Mr. Borlase thought that preparing a map would be very expensive, and moved — " That the City Surveyor be direoted to report on the present drainage." He also wished to see the drains throughout tU9 City marked on a map in red ink. CITY STTBTEYOB'S EEPOBT. Tho City Surveyor presented the following report : — Tho hard labor gang engaged in Tasman-sfcreefy arc proceeding rapidly with tho necessary work, as are also th« gangs employed on the Terrace, on Thorndon Quay, and in Nairn-atreet. For the continuation of Taaman-street, I am of opinion, that it will be necessary to carry the street through by moans of free labor, whioh will entail on the Board the expense of a contract for forming the road for a distance of about (14) fourteen chains, which will probably cost £100. I have examined the Ohiro road, and the slips mentioned by Mr. Wright. The slips can be renwvod by the men at present employed by the Board, so soon as tho work they are engaged on is completed. Tho work at present going on in Wilha-BtreOti will be completed in a few days. Tho handrails on the Terrace, at its junction with Boulcott-street is completed, and the car* penter is employed in constructing the culvert from the Union Bank in "WUlia-Btreet, to Mr. Howe's (tho old Post Office). I must again request the Board to give some public notice for the removal of nuisances along tho east side of Lambton Quay. E. M. Skebt, City Surveyor. Tho members then adjourned at a quarter to 6 until that day week.
