THE WAIRARAPA ELECTION.
DECLARATION OF THE POLL. (from a correspondent.) This declaration of tho poll for tho recent election for the House of Representatives for this district, took place at 12 o'clock on Monday, at the School House, Greytown, in tho presonce of a large number of the electors. Mr Wardell stated that the result of the polling was : Mr Bunny 105 votes, Mr I Pearce 84i, thereby giving Mr Bunny a maijority of twenty-one; ho thereupon de- \ clared Mr Henry Bunny to be duly elected ! as the member of the House of Kepresenta* | tives for the district of the Wairarapa. The i announcement was received with immense j applause. 1 Mr Bunny then stepped forward and said : Electors of Wairarapa, and I hope I may also ( call those present my true and earnest friends, j j— l return you my sincere and hearty thanks i for the position you have by your votea ! ! placed me in. We have had to fight a hard j , battle ; every influence was brought i against me to prevent tny success, j whilst I relied only upon the free and inde- ! pendent votes of my fellow settlers. I do not look at the triumphant result of this contest as entirely a mark of respect to myself, but I regard it in showing on the 1 part of the resident electors a determination I to elect as their representative whom they I should think tit, and a determination that j the resident electors will never allow a few landowners and runholders in combination with the Wellington Chamber of Commerce to dictate to them who should be their member in the House of llepresentatives, and I j do trust from this time forth no person will be chosen to represent this district in any Legislative Assembly but one w}jp will be resident amongst us. (Loud cheers.) Mr Bunny concluded by moving a vote of thanks to tho Returning Officer, seconded by G. A. Renall, Esq, M.G.A., which was carried by acclamation. On Mr Bunny leaving the School House, he was put in a chair carried by six stout yeomen of the district, and conveyed to the Grey town Arms Hotel, headed by a brass band playing " See the Conquering Hero Comes." Hei'e a sumptuous repast was provided, to which some fifty electors sat down, at which tho usual loyal and patriotic toasts were drank, and responded to in tho most hearty manner.
