COMMERCIAL.

Independent Obfiob, j . Friday Evening. There is no change to note. The auction sales during the early part of the week were unimportant. On Thursday, Messrs. Johnston's aalo of surplus stores, ex Berar, -was well attended and the articles realised good prices. Mr Alfred A. Barnett held a sale by public auction at the Commercial Sale Room on Monday last. Sundry clearing out lots of general nierchandiae were dispoaed of and realised tolerably well. Purchasers at auction make frequent complaints that, in many instances, the reserved prices are too high. It would be as well were merchants and importers to consider that as the general consumption is now greater than formerly, large I parcels may be readily disposed of, and the increased sales thus effected will amply compensate for a less advance and profit than has been hitherto ruling in Wellington. The mercantile community will find it advantageous to endeavor to concentrate a large trade here by proving that goods can be sold in large lots at a low advance. Trade buyers from the neighboring provinces are now finding their way here, and therefore ifc would be highly desirable to encourage their making purchases in this City ; and as Btocks are heavy, and large consignments will be shortly to hand, Wellington Bhould be as good a market for intending buyers as either Dunedin, ChristI church, or Auckland.
