Although the s.s Tararua which arrived from Sydney via Nelson yesterday morning brought no English news, as telegrams had not been received at Sydney when she left on the morning of the 15th inst., she brings important intelligence received from San Francisco, by the barque Rosalie. The Rosalie left San Francisco on the 4th of April. From an extra published by the Nelson Colon i.rf we compile the following interesting accounts : FROM RICHMOND. Special Despatch No 1. Chicago, April 2nd. President Lincoln telegraphs from. City Point at 8 o'clock, this (Sunday)morning as follows : — ''Last night General Grant telegraphed me that Sheridan with his cavalry and the fifth corps had captured three brigades of infantry and a train oi waggons ; also several batteries. The prisoners number several thousands. This morning Grant having ordered an attack along the whole line, telej graphs as follows : — " Both Wright and Parkes have got through the enemy's lines. The battle rages furiously. " Sheridan, with his cavalry and the Fifth Corps, and Mills' division of the Second I Corps, which was sent to him this morning, is now sweeping down from the west. All now looks highly favorable." A second despatch, dated 11 o'clock, from the President's shows a smash up of the rebel I lines in front of Petersburg, by Generals Wright, Parke and Ord, who have joined in the light. Sheridan's cavalry of the Fifth Corps and part of the second division are coming in from the west on the enemy's flank. y A despatch from General Grant's Adjutant General says : — " Fighting has been going on for three days, during which the fbi'ces on both sides exhibited unsurpassed valoi\ This i* all we have received thus far, but it is sufficient to show that all goes well. The following (says the Alfa California of 4th April) are copies of the despatches which came to hand yesterday afternoon previous to the receipt of the confirmation of the fall of Richmond. We write with an eagles quill, presented to the Alia office by Mr J. W JL. Jones of this city ; a quill reserved for the express duty of chronicling the capture of the Capital of Rebellion. Its fellow has been kept to announce the declaration of Peace and the restorat on of the Union. The following were received by the President of the- Telegraph Company. The first, from Salt Lake, read — " A Chicago paper stales that Petersburgh ' has been captured by General Grant." ; A second despatch was received from the operator at Ohuma, dated late in the afternoon, to the effect — " Pctersbnrg was evacuated, and Richmond taken. One hundred guns and many prisoners captured."
