RESIDENT MAGISTRATES' COURT. Tuesday, June 13.

(Before C. D. B. Ward, Esq., R.M.) DEUNKENNESS. Constable Nathaniel Palling charged a man of the name of Joseph Havfc with being drunk, and breaking windows. The prisoner, after a rather lame defence, was committed to gaol for seven days ■with hard labor, and ordered to pay the sum of 15s. for damages. In default of such payment to be committed for an additional 14 days -with hard labor. Corporal Kinsella charged William Evans -with drunkenness. Being the prisoner's first appearance he was fined ss. DISPUTED CLAIMS. James H. Williams sued Gk H. Frazer for the recovery of a debt of ss. Settled ont of Court. William Moiham sued Alfred Hewitt for the recovery of the sura of 103. Case dismissed. Wednesday, June 14. (Before W. B. Rhodes, Esq., and A. de B. Brandon, Esq., J. P.'s) RECEIVING GOODS UNDER FALSE PRETENCES. John Mclntosh was charged with obtaining goods under false pretences. John Warmoll, being sworn, deposed — On the evening of the 12th inst., the prisoner Mclntosh came into my shop and purchased some goods ; my shopman served him with goods to the amount; of eight shillings and sixpence, for which, he tendered a cheque on the Union Bank of Australia, signed by George Valentine ; tho cheque was for £3 5s ; the cheque produced is the same cheque that he tendered ; I gave liim £2 16s 6d cash as change, besides the goods ; on the morning of the 13th inst., I presented tho cheque at tho Union Bank of Australia ; I was told there was no person of the name of Greorge Valentine who had an account there ; I applied at the other Banks to see if there had been any mistake in drawing the cheque ; they also stated that no person of that name had an account there. By the Court — The cheque wa3 handed me by my shopman and I gave the change. The prisoner was remanded till Thursday, the 15th inst., for further evidence. Samuel Blnckmore and John Nicholl were sentenced to fourteen days' hard labor for vagrancy. Rose Palmer, charged with being drunk and using obscene language was fined ten shillings. Thursday, 15th June. (Before C. P. R, Ward, Esq., R.M.) DESERTION. After a few minor debt cases of no general in« terest, John O'Brien, a private in the 68th Foot was brought up on a charge of desertion from lu3 regiment. Committed. John Brown, a seaman serving on board the Berar, Captain Hall, was also charged with deserting from his vessel now lying in the harbor, and having nothing to say in defence, hewascom« mitted for 12 weeks with hard labor. FALSE PRETENCES. John M'Tntosh was again brought up on the above charge, and was again remanded until the lGth inst, DRUNKENNESS. Rose Palmer, an old offender, was charged with the above offence, and committed for 7 days with hard labor. Peter Davison, for a like offence was fined ss.
