, {To the Editor of the Wkllingtox Inokprndbnt) Sik, — Spring Ihtit- one of our members has i pledged himself to bring a measure before the ! Council to Inn c the highway io Karori through ' PolhiU's gully opened, I trust, that (he Rmpire City i will energetically lend its aid to furMier such tin 1 important, object. Will it be credited elsewhere that Wellington i has been established for the space of a, quarter of i a century, and, nit hough several times suvreyed, this natural and easy line of road to her back i ground, has not yet been opened. J)o the people of To Aro know that they have so large a supply of wood so near them, and that they sire regularly supplied with firewood, by a private road through that line, which comes so near to us tli.il the sound of drivers', urging their teams onwards, can be be heard in the centre of Karori. It has been said this line, when last purveyed, was not shorter than the other one ; but, granting that to have been true, in fairness it ought to have been admitted, "we would then have had a good one." I think there is room for improvement in the survey ; but I am well assured (ho road would be easily constructed, much of it being side-cutting in loose gravel, and, what is of more importance, would easily be kept in repair, there being few bridges or culverts, and it lies open to the sun. AYe have a growing want which will become a growing gain for Wellington to supply. Much of our soil is composed of a still' loam, which, under proper management, will come second to none for enduring fertility, but like all high-lying new ground must first be well-worked and manured, and every practical ground-im-prover knows that no manure is superior to that collected in towns for that purpose ; but, tilt hough abundant and near, we cannot hope to profit by it until a good line of road is formed, as the rate joi t'ari'iagt! now, ii' we got the manure for liolliirif, I would far exceed the value. J am, Sir, &c, A Practical G-kound-Wokkek. Karori, June 9, 18G5.
