PUBLIC MEETING AT MASTERTON.

We are glad to find that the friends of Dr Featherston in the Wairarapa are bestirirng themselves vigorously. Our Masterton correspondent has sent us the report of a public meeting which was held at Masterton, on the 3rd inst., to concert measures to ensure (Dr Peatherston's return. Despite the short- | ness of the notice given, a considerable num- [ ber of settlers were present, the chair being • occupied by W. H. Donald, Esq. Mr '. S. ltevans addressed the meeting at conf siderable length, pointing out the claims ( which Dr Featherston had to the support and confidence of the electors, and urging them to use every effort in his behalf. In a few brief words he dismissed Mr Masters and then referred to the only other candidate in the field, Mr C. B. Borlase, than whom he thought a more unsuitable man for so important an office could not have been found. He found this by taking the address which he had issued, and, after reading it, pulled to pieces one after another the statements it contained. Mr Revans concluded an able and logical speech amidst much applause. He was followed by Mr A. Renall.M.H.R., who addressed those present in a similar strain. Mr Charles Dixon and Mr Boys also spoke in support of Dr Featherston, the former referring, amongst other things, to the interest he had taken in education, and the latter to the services in connection with the removal of the seat of Government and the establishment of the Panama Mail Service. Ultimately, after making arrangements to watch Dr Featherston's interests during the contest, the meeting passed a vote of thanks to the Chairman and separated. We shall publish a full report on Tuesday.
