Departure ov Troops for the Front. — The orders from head-quarters requiring the men of the 14th to proceed to " the Fi'ont"' were instantly carried out, and last night 149 rank and file of the 2nd Battalion 14th Regiment, under the command of Lieut. Colonel Dwyer, Captain Buck, Captain Glancy, Lieutenant Green, Ensign Caldwell, and Sergeant-Major Barrett, embarked on board the s.s.fWanganuiforWanganui. The men marched down to the wharf preceded by the drummers and lifers of the Itegiinental and Volunteer bands, who played inspiriting music in honor of the gallant fellows' departure. As they passed down Willis Street, cheer after cheer echoed fi?om the ranks, which, on the wharf, were returned by the crowd. JN"or was a touch of sentiment wanting," as more than one^pale and weeping woman's face in the crowd showed that painful partings had been made and sad hearts would be left behind. But indeed, the majority of the rank and file were uproariously jolly, and apparently welcomed the approaching change to active service, while a few — small blame to 'em — had been paying their respects at the shrine of Bacchus somewhat freely. However, after a few amusing scenes, all were embarked, and with a hearty parting cheer as the Wanganui loosed from her moorings, the 14th bade farewell to Wellington, to seek an honorable reputation in scenes of danger. A civilian on the wharf, somehow tumbled in, but was fished out none the worse for his ducking. During the absence of the troops, garrison duty will be performed by the Volunteers and Militia.
