LATEST FROM AUCKLAND AND HAWKE'S BAY.

By the s.s. Queen we have two days later news from Axickland, viz, to the 13th inst, and complete files to the 15th inst from Hawke's Bay. The momentous question, Whore shall the Assembly meet, was up to the mail's departure undecided. The Ministry had recommended Wellington as the place of meeting, but at this the Auckland people appear to have become very much alarmed, and a petition in favor of Auckland being chosen was at once got up. The Neio Ze&lander of the 13th inst., says :-— " The Meeting of the Assemblt. — The petition to tha Governor was not presented yesterday, as it was, we believe, thought desirable to have g larger number of signatures. Up to yesterday afternoon, about eleven hundred signatures had been obtained. The petition will lie for signature at the various Banks, and at the New Zealander office, up to two o'clock to-day, and will be presented to the Premier some time about three o'clock." The same journal subsequently states that 1200 signatures had been received up to three o'clock in the 12th inst. The Southern Cross and Neio Zealand Herald, to their credit be it said, do not pander to the selfishness of the Auckland people who insist upon having the meeting there, regardless of the distinctly understood arrangement made last session that the next should not be held at Auckland. These journals point out in a clear and forcible manner the necessity of consulting the interests of the South in this matter, while the New Zealander insists with a frantic eagerness that there is but one place in New Zealand where the Assembly can or should meet — and that place is Auckland. By the very latest advices, we learn that the question was still unsetlted. The Ministry held firm to their original recommendation of Wellington, while the Governor dslayed to decide, until he had received the monster petition.
