RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURTWELLINGTON.
Thursday, 17th December, 1863. (Before H. St. Hill, Esq., R.M.) c Thomas Richardson appealed against the assessment of his property in Willis-street, v by the " Town Board." Thomas Bichardson, being sworn, said — a The amount was too high. It was assessed r at rather more than £4 13s. per foot. My I half acre is assessed at £620, and the other [half of the acre in Abel Smith-st. which has two frontages was assessed at £400. c There are three houses on his half-acre, but y they are assessed separately from the land, Q and does not object to their assessment, but thinks the assessment on the land too high, it is at the rate of £1040 the acre ; considers 5 the land should be rated not higher than i. £890 ; considers that fair ; land fenced and 0 cultivated no doubt is more valuable. t George Richardson, son of the appellant, being sworn, said — I consider land in our T neighbourhood worth £2 10s. the foot. , The f acre opposite was sold a short time ago for . £600 or but little more. t Cross-examined by 1 Mr. Allen, Chairman of the Board — That acre was sold by order c o£ the Court. j John Howard Wallace, being sworn, said t — The Board had appointed him to make the , assessment of the lands, houses, and tene--3 ments, within the city.
