DEATH OF CAPTAINS MERCER AND PHELPS.
The Southern Cross in a second Edrtron, published the following : — Wednesday, Nov. 05. A lelegram has just arrived from Dniry, intimating tbat C.< plain Mercer, R.A. , and CajU. Piielps, 14th Regt , died early this morning. Their bodies were to lnave the Queens Redoubt this morning, and in all likelihood will be in town this evening. The bodies ofihe.se officers will be buried on Friday. The funeral will leave the Albeit 1 Barracks orl that day. Mrs Mercer aud her children proceed by ilie Himalaya to England. The Wounded at Rangiiuui...— We are j glad to learn that Lieut. Talbot k progressing favourably, notwitstanding the severe wounds he received at the attack on Rangiriri. We regret to hear that privates Brown aud Cain, of ! the 65th regiment have since died of tlieir wounds. — It is reported tbat the wound received by Captain Gresson, in the arm, is so severe, that amputation will be necessary. Narrow Escape. — Colonel Wyatt of the 65th had a narrow escape from death ; a bullet pierced his haversack ; smashed a. bottle of rum, aud was found in his clothes flattened.
