i SYDNEY MARKETS. (From the Sydney horning Herald, 21st October.) There has been rather more activity in our markets during the past month, but prices generally hare not improved. The d emand for goods for New Zealand has been very brisk during the past week, and has tended to relieve our heavy stocks. Besides the news by the mail of decreased shipment! is also satisfactory, and should future shipments be on a more moderate scale, higher rates may be anticipated. "We subjoin the latest report of our markets. Flour.— Tho market has been steady, and prices rule about tho same as last month. Adelaide is quoted at £14 10s to £15 per ton. "Wheat is not so firm, and has given way about 6ii per bushel— Califomian, 5s 9d to 6s'3d; Adelaide, 6s Cd. The Panama, from San Francisco, with a cargo of wheat and flour, has, wo hear, been ordered to Melbourne. Liquids.— Alo in bulk Is in moderate demand, and first brands are quoted at £G 10s to £6 15s. The old brew is 10s lower. Porter in bulk is dull of sale; Taylor's is quoted at £G to £6 10s. Bottlsd ale is in some request, and first brands command from 10s tolOsCd; other brands, 8s Gd to 9s Gd. Bottled porter is dull of sale, and prices range from 7s to 8s Gd. Brandy is not bo firm, and ' has declined 3d per gallon ; Martell's is worth from 9a Gd to 9s 9d; Hennessy's, 9s 3d to 9s Gd. Bum has been inquired for, and some speculative transactions have caused an advance of Id to 2d per gallon ; 30 o.p. ia quoted at 3s Id to 3s 2d. Geneva continues dull of sale, and first brands cannot be quoted higher than 9s 6d to 10s Gd. Whisky is difficult of sale and has been offered at 3s Gd. In wines there has been very little doing, but as stocks are heavy, in order to effect sales, lower rates must be submitted to. At present prices are nominal. Teas are firmer, large parcels of common congous having been bought up. The present quotations range from £6 10s to £9 per chest Boxes 25s to 275. Green teas are almost unsaleable, and prices are nominal. Suqaes are firmer. There has been some demand for low sugars at advanced prices. At auction yesterday the cargo of Mauritius sugars, ex Ville de Nantes, was quitted at the following rates :— White crystals, £38 10s : bright, £34, to £3G2sGd; yellow, £30 to £34 2s 6d; bright counters, £28 to £30; medium, £26 to £27 10s- good brown, £24 to £25 ; ration, £21 10s to £23 10s. Coffee is firmer. Manila and Java none in the market Plantation is about Jd per lb higher, the quotation being 10£ dto lid per lb. Candies are not so firm, and have given way about Id per lb, Betawnte are quoted a t 124 mim «,,
Colonial Produce.— Wool : The market has been very f depressed during the month, buyers in the face of the > account sales, not being disposed to operate, except at re- . dueed rates. Very few parcels of the new clip have yet come to hand, consequently prices cannot be fairly tested, j but it is expected that prices must rule lower. The latest quotations are— Fleece, Is 4d to Is 8d; scoured, Is 2d to 2s 3d; greasy, 7d to lid. Sheepskins have continue firm, and have realised from s§d to 8d per lb. Taxlow. — The market has been dull, and prices rule lower. The quantity offered lately has been above what was required for the town trade, and as shippers cannot give the rates ruling prices must give way. The quotations arc — Mutton, £38 to £40 per ton ; baef, shipping, £30 to £32 per ton, 28s to 34s per cwt, for home consumption. HtDES. — Shipping'parcols ar« dull of sale, but first-class heavy hides aye bought by the tanners at full rates, viz., from 14s to 15s 6d each ; shipping parcels range from 10s to 11b Gd; inferior and very light, 5s to 8s 6d each. Eicb is firmer, but with little business doing. Best Patna is quoted at £20 per ton, and at this price sales have been made, Oilmen's Stokes. — All articles under this heading continue very dull of sale, and to effect saleß to any amount, lower rates have to be submitted to. Salt. — Stocks are heavy. Liverpool is dull of sale at £3 5s per ton ; rock salt is offered at £3 per ton.
