Major Gorton's Lecture. — On Tuesday evening last Major Goitou delivered a second lecture, at the Wellington Athenaum, his subject being as before, "The Rifle and bow to use it." The gallant rnnjor bandied his topic in an able manner, and contrired with the aid of diagrams, to explain clearly the construction of the Rifle, the theory of firing at loDg and short ranges, and in short made his lecture as useful as that Rifleman's vade mecum the book of Mr Hans Bust. The hall was crowded and a cordial vote of thanks was passed to the Major at the close of his lecture. Johnsonviixk Temperance Society. — A social Tea Meeting of the members of this Society and their friends was held in the Wesleyan Chapel Johnsonvilleon Monday last, when, after enjoying an excellent tea, the tables were cleared and a public meeting held. The chair was occupied by Mr Bradshaw, who opened the proceedings, and was followed by Messrs Sims, Reay, Jones, Williams, Catt, Read, and Robinson, who each delivered addresses. Several songs were sung during the evening, and after a few hours of innocent enjoyment, the proceedings closed with a vote of thanks being passed to the committee of the , Society. Court of Appeal. — Pursuant to adjournment this Court sat yesterday morning at 10 o'clock for the purpose of judgment being delivered in the case of Woodwaid v Beard. All the Judges were present, except his Honor Mr Justice Richmond, who was, we regret to learn unavoidably absent on account of ill-health. Their Honors respectively delivered elaborate judgments, each agreeing that the objection raised by the learned counsel for the defence — that the action was wrongly brought iv the name of Mr Woodward, and that the Superintendent was the only person who had a right to sue on behalf of the Province — was fatal, and the appeal should be dismissed with costs. His Honor Chief Justice said that he had consulted with his Honor Mr Justice Richmond on the matter, and be desired that it should be intimated to the Court, that he saw no reason to differ from the decision arrived at by his brethren. At its rising the Court adjourned until next Saturday morning, in order to give counsel an opportunity of making a motion in the matter of Teschmaker and another v McLean. Christy's Minstrels. — in consequence of the very wet weather, the performance of these artistes did not take place last night. Friday and Saturday are advertised as the occasions of two farewell performances. Hutt Market. — There were a pretty good attendance at the market yesterday, and some good stock were exhibited, and several lots sold. The prices realised were satisfactory, and showed a just appreciation on the part of the bujers. Some entire horses were exhibited, and did great credit to their owners. Disappearance. — On Tuesday morning a* .11 o'clock, a man supposed to be of weak mind left his house on Te Aro, and had not up to a late hour last night been heard of, although the most diligent search was made, and the police put on the alert. Much anxiety has been experienced by his friends in consequence of his disappearance, and it is hoped if any trace be found of him, that intimation will be given to the police. He is a man of about six feet high, of spare build, fair hair and complexion, aud is about thirty-six years of age. When last seen he was dressed in a shepherd's plaid coat and vest, with dark trousers, and cloth cap.
