HAWKE'S BAY AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY'S SHOW.

(From the Hawke's Bay Herald.) The first show of the H.iwke's Bay Agricultural Society took place on Wednesday last the 14th inst. The weather was fine, though somewhat windy and dusty, and large numbers availed themselves of the opportunity to enjoy a holiday. The day was quite a gala one ; the town was like a deserted village; and on no former occasion has Havelock presented so gay and busy an aspect. The show was held for this year in Mr Danvers' paddock, which was kindly given by him for the purpose at a nominal charge; and the number of persons on the ground, including natives, could uot have beeu less than four hundred.

The show of stock was scarcely what a stranger would expect from a piovince which, at present, is nearly altogether a stock-growing couutry; but considering that this was a first attempt, and that the season is a somewhat incon veu'ent one for the sheep farmer, the results, on the whole, must be regarded as having been of a very encouraging and promising character. The first class of stock named in the programme was that of, — HORSES. Jtjdges, — Messrs Hunter, Heslop, Bousfield. Sec. I. — Thorough bred Stallion Sire, — For this none were entered. 1 horough- bred Mare, — Mr W, Ellinghara, mare Nelly, (p.) Major Whitmore, mare and foal. Tvo year old Colt or Filly bred in New Zealand. Mr C. J. Nairn, colt. Yearling Colt or Filly bred in the Province,'— Mr James Watt, filly, (p.) Sec. II. — Heavy Draught Stallion, Sire, — Mr J. D. Canning, grey, Conqueror, (p.) Mr J. N. Williams, grey, Cumberland. Mr D. Carmichael, black, Maui. Mr A. McLean, grey, Farmer. Heavy Draught Mare or Mare and Foal, — Mr A. Livingstone, bay mare, (p.) Mr B. D, Danvers, grey mare. Mr J. N. Williams, bay mare. Mr A. McLean, three mares. Tivo-year old Colt or Filly, — Mr Elbourne, bay colt, (p.) Major Whitmore, grey colt, (p ) , Yearling Colt or Filly bred in the Province, — Mr A. McLean, filly, (p.) \ Sec. 111. — Working Horse or Mare, best suited \ for Agricultural purposes,— Mr Powdreli, black mare, (p.) Mr Danvers, grey mare, Beauty. . Mr G. Peebles, two bay geldings. . Hack Gelding or Mare,— Mr H. Barker, grey gelding, Squire, (p.) Mr J. Hague, gelding. 1 Mr A. McLean, bay gelding. Two-year old Hack, bred in the Province, — , Mr J. Hague, bay filly, (p.) — Iv sectiou one, it is to be regretted that no thorough-bred stallion was entered. A little \ sacrifice on the part of the owners of such would have obviated a blank which does not look well in the eyes of strangers. The prize for the best thorough-bred mare was awarded to Mr Elling- s ham's Nelly, the dam of that promising youug a horse " Euclid." The class of draught horses was better repre- * sented. The prize for the best stallion sire lay between v Conqueror," a fine 3 year old, very heavy, strong limbed, and likely to grow into a very handsome animal; and " Maui," a black l horse, not so heavy as " Conqueror," but a well A proportioned and handsome stylish beast — well ' known to all horse-breeders in the proviuce, his stock having proved thorough good workers. C1 The prize was awarded to " Conqueror." The f prize for the best thoroughbred mare was given to Mr Livingstone's mare by " Sampson," of l Wellington — a handsome animal. Mr Wil- a liatns' mare, imported from Auckland, was very . evenly matched with the former— so much so ' that "the umpire had to be called in to decide the question of pre-eminence. Mr Danvers' v grey was the heavest in bone — not so well proportioned but a fine latge powerfnl beast. k In section three, the prize for the best work- F ing horse or mare was awarded to MrPowdrell's black mare, the other competitors having been l l two fine geldings from Woburn station, and Mr Danvers' grey mare " Beauty." Mr Parker's F " Squire' 1 was pronounced to be the best hack, J' but we think there were better horses in the * paddock although not shown. l A very pretty bay pony stallion was exhibited ." by Mr J. It. Duncan. It attracted much notice J by its beautiful shape and docile disposition ; but there being no class open for such description of !j stock, no prize was awarded. l
