(To the Editor 0/ tha Wellington Indbp«kdh>jt). Pihautea, Sept. 17, 18G3. Sir,— .Jn the report of the Superintendent's visit to the Wairarapa, which appeared in your paper of the 3rd inst., it is stated that he (the Superintendent) ascertained, as he had surmised on his way up, to the Hutt settlers that Manihera's letter to me, was writtea when he was drunk, if not written nt the instigation of a drnnken publican. It i 9 with reluctance I appear in print, but I consider it due to Manihern to request that you will, by the publication of this letter, enable me to declare that statement to be unfair and untrue. The letter referred to, was neither written by a drunken man, nor at the instigation of a drunken publican it was written by Manibera at his own house at Papawai, in the presence of Mr Skipper, and addressed to Mr Ronaldson, then at my house, and myself, to give us information, which he considered we ought to possess, and which he suggested should be forwarded to Wellington. For this conduct, I consider he is entitled to thanks, not insult. The information the letter contained was undoubtedly important, and the writer of the letter is not responsible for the excitement which a misconception of its purport, produced at the Hutt. — I am, Sir, your obedient servant, 0. R. Bidwell.
