MURDER OF MR RAYNER.
IMPORTANT FROM OTAKI. [The following was issued as an " Independent Extra" on Saturday moruing.] By the Overland Mail we have received the Chronicle, and our usual correspondence from Wanganui and the West Coast. The Chronicle speaking of Mr Rayner's murder, says : — Several persons, to whom suspicion attached, have been placed under surveillance of the police, with a view to tboir being examined at the inquest. From the evidence then produced it would appear that the deceased was first struck down and stunned by the blow on the forehead, and then finished with his own revolver. A Rangitikei settler named Holgate is stated to be missing. 200 rifles were received at Wanganui by the Storm Bird. When further supplies expected are received, it is estimated tiiere will be 900 armed mcii of the Militia and Volunteers in the distiict. The intelligence from Otaki contained in the letter of our own correspondent is important. -jg.lt ■■ "1 ''I1 . . ■■' 'L Jl U) JB.
