Ikquest. — An in quest was held at the Native Village, Tukupukiha, Porirua, on Monday the 7th inst, by T. J. Knox, M.D. Coroner, and a mixed jury, on the body of Rauiri Waitara, who died suddenly on Saturday evening, the sth inst. Several witnesses were summoned, and the jury, after a mature deliberation, brought in a verdict of "died from naturaljcauses. 1 ' It appeared that the deceased was suffering from pulmonary affection, and had a bad cough. He had been out pig hunting, aud on his return home, sat by the fi ro for a short time, and taking ofl his coat, fell in*° the arms of another native and died instantly. It is thoughtjthatjthe excitement of pig hunting had accellerated his death. Rauiri was ah old resident in the district, and was much respected both by Europeans and natives. The Lady Bird,— The examination of the bottom of the Lady Bird shows that the damage she received when she was lately run on shore on Pig island was only to the extent of indenting one or two of her plates; but as she had received a similar injury on her other side, by running on a rock somewhere in Otago, Captain Johnson the Government Surveyor of Steamers, has licensed her to" run but for three months, only when she will be compelled to go to Sydney to repair, as, at present, there are no means for effecting this in any port in New Zealand. Proposed Steam Communioat ion'between New Zealand and Tasmania. — We observe that a motion has been in Mhe Tasmanian Assembly recommending the sum of £2000 for subsidising a powerful steamer to trade between Hobart Town and New Zealand. The Viotokia.— The Argus expresses the opiniou that the steam sloop victoria will not be sent to New Zealand waters.
Califobsian Circus. — On Monday last, Mr W. H. FoJey took a benefit at this Circus, aud we were very glad to observe, that there wus % crowded au« dience on that occaaion, The performances were •f a similar description to those already noticed in these columns. Everything passed oft" in the most agceeable manner possible, The performers seemed to vie with each other in their endeavours to please, and their efforts appeared to be highly appreciated by the audience, if we may judge from the frequent bursts of applause with which they were greeted. Mr Foley acted as clown on [this occasion, and we need hardly say, acquitted himself in a most creditable manner. The Company are all clever arlislus in their several departments ; and the vnulling and tumbling are equal to anything we have ever seen. We miss, however, one #reat attraction in the Hug, namely, a lady performer. On Mr Foley'a last visit, Miss Tournear was tlie favorite of the arena, and elicited universal admiration by her daring and skilful feats of horsemanship. We understand that Miss Tonrnear will join the Company at Canterbury, and will afterwards pay a visit to Wellington. A performance will be given on Monday next, for the benefit of the Odd Fellows' Hall, aud we trust the generous conduct of the proprietors will be heartily responded to. Sale of Cattle. — The Nelson Colonist of the ' Ist inst,, says: — A shipment of cattle, about 23 in number, brought from Wanganui, was sold in the Market Place last Saturday, and fetched an average of £15 15s per head." The Town Boabd.— The elections of members to represent the various wards in the City under the new " Town Board Act " have taken place, the nomination having come off on Monday. For Lambton Ward, Messrs Moore, Levy and Pliramer were returned without opposition. Four candidates were nominated in the Thorndon Ward, viz., Messrs. G. Hart, W. Allen, C, B. Borlase, and G. Pickett, but the show of hands being in favor of the three former, the latter retired. In Te Aro Ward six candidates were proposed, Messrs. Hunter, G. Luxford, Jacka, Hickson, Martin, and Homer. The show of hands being in favor of the three latter candidates a poll was demanded, which took place on Tuesday with the following result : — Hickaon, 92; Martin, 78; J. H- Horner, 73; G. Hunter, 38; G. H. Luxford, 11; S, S. Jacka, retired, W.C.D.F. Amateur Dramatic Club. — The members of this Dramatic Club, encouraged by the highly flattering reception which their efforts have received give another entertainment at the Olympic j ro-night under the patronage of his Honor the Sutperintendent, which includes ihe burlesque of the | " Lady of Lyons," the farce of the •D ouble-Bedded ! Room, and that piquant comedy" Hasty Cenclusion." We anticipate a full house. Thr Storm Bibd. — The s.s. Storm Bird, now eight days overdue from Manukau, Ilaglan, Taran&ki and Wanganui, had not up to the hour of going to press, made her appearance. It is expected that she may have been employed on a special trip by the General Governmeut. As the latest dates showed that there was a probability of something important occurring, we shall issue an extra imme diately on her arrival, containing full details of the news.
