HAWAKS' BAY.
The natives were quiet at Hawkes' Bay when the Wonga Wonga sailed. Every means had been adopted by the authorities to place he settlement in an efficient state of defence, o as to meet any contingency that might arise. The Herald Extra of the 27th inst., sajs :— "Major Whitmore, who has returned from Auckland by the Wonga Wonga, has succeeded in securing the assistance of the General Government towards keeping up bi-monthly com* munication by steam between the two provinces. In this^-and in other matters, the exertions of this gentlpman in favor of the province are such as to entitle him to the thanks of all. It will be seen that the militia appointments are all gazetted ; and we believe that the force is likely to be called out for training throughout the province."
