WELLINGTON LIVE STOCK MARKET.

Messrs GK H. XiCxfosd & Co's Report for thet week endlßX July 17, 1863. . ' v . The export cattle. trade has been gradually, contracting ■within the narrowest limits," and is, we beliovß, now canflned to one Bhipper from this port, the others hating retired tn disgust from a business where the whole of th« profits— when any— were swamped in heavy charges aad commissions — where the entire risk' was 'thrown upon - them, none of it being borne on the Otago- side— and where, no matter how much the cost of the cargo, or how high the nominal market price at the port of delivery, ; the nett proceeds of account , sales hava been with very few exceptions, Flemish, ' Untf| a different system is initiated, either by leaving the Otagcs dealers to take upon themselves the risk of profit, or loss, by salting , the cattle to them here, as,we have constantly urged, Is the proper course to pursue, and our' prices* set aide by - Bide with theirs, shew a flattering margin of profit ; or, by doing as we believe IB now done by Mr, O'Halloran, having a person: down there with an interest in the yentore» to : take charge of them and thereby avoid the 1 greater portion 9* JjK> j^g^B^ttcu'liftY^^

possibility of the trade being made a paying one— except for the agents — we can hardly hope to see any considerae ble business done. We consider the former course the preferable one, as cattle can be had here cheaply enough to cover all risk for those parties who being interested and on the spot could look after them. There is little to report in the way of sales during the past week. 208 head of fair store cattle have been brought in from Welch's station for shipment south, and we hear of a sale of 500 head, of mixed cattle at £3 10s or £4 Generally, the market may be said to be dull there toeing little demand except for fat stock, which commands full rates both for home consumption and shipment. The Tyra and Gazelle— both loaded with store cattle, by Q. S.^ O'Halloran, Esq., sailed some days back. The Harriet Armitage, is, we believe, under engagement to load stock for Otago — the Bifleman and Bemark will probably go out of the trade in the meantime — as no cargoes are offering. We quote store cattle at £3 10s to £5 per head ; fat cattle 4d to 4Jd per lb ; fat sheep, 4£d to 6d ; store sheep, 12s to 14s each ; fat calves, 40s to 80s Pigs— Two or three large droves of these animals have been lately brought into town by the Maories, and disposed of readily at 20s to 40s each.
