Canterbury D_BENTDRES.--The Sydney Empire of the 9th May, says :— " With a view of raising money to be expended by vote of the Provincial Council of Canterbury, New Zealand, solely on immigration and large publio works in that Province, the Superintendent is authorised to issue debentures at 6 per cent, interest, to an amount not exceeding £500,000. The principal to be payable at the expiration of fifty years ; and a sinking fund is instituted for paying it out of the public revenues. The - cateer of the province af Canterbury, though not stimulated by gold discoveries, has 4 been marked by steady substantial progress,' and prudent management. And the appropriation j ofthe money to be thus raised to the re«produc^- . tive public purposes specified, indicates a po- •';* licy in accordance with tbe received principles of political economy. We are satisfied, therefore, tbat we are consulting the common weal in thus bringing under the notice of those .who. are looking for opportunities of such investment, the proposition of the Canterbury Council, 77; Messrs Gilchrist, Watt, and Co., are the acting agents in Syduey for the Protincial Go?eiftt» ment of Canteibury, from whom all jpaiticulftW maybe obtained* _ h ;. , : :7& 7 7?;.
