Ledger, agent — 160 head cattle, Eames. - The Chilian baTque Clara Rosalie, Capt Frodden,* from Mauritius, arrived in this harbor on Monday last, after an t average passage of 50 days. Her cargo consists of 2583 bags sugar, and she is consigned to Messrs. Johnston & Co. The brig Fortune, Capt Paton, from Newcastle, N.SW., arrived in this port on Monday night last, after a passage of 17 days, with a cargo of 220 tons coal, for the LO.R.M. Company. The LO.R.M. Company's as. Prince Alfred, E. Wheeler, with her accustomed punctuality, arrived here on Tuesday afternoon. She left Sydney on the 25th ult, at 4.30 p.m., and made the passage to Nelson in live days fourteen hours. She experienced a predominance of westerly windß, with occasional squalls and heavy Bhowers of rain. Left Nelson at 9.30 p.m. on Monday, and arrived at Picton the following morning at 9 o'clock. Left Picton at 11.17 a.m., and arrived here at 4.12 p.m., the passage occupying five hours less live minutes. The excellent passages which the Prince Alfred has uniformly made since her expensive refit six months ago, are worthy of remark. On no occasion has sho been more than five days eighteen hours on the passage from Sydney to Nelson, or vice versa, while her average runs between those ports has not exceeded five days eight hours. One voyage she came down in four days sixteen hours, and went back in femr days eighteen hours; a performance till then unaccomplished; for although the Lord Worsley, under the command of Capt Johnston, on one occasion made the passage from Sydney to Nelson in four days eighteen hours, and the Raugatiri in about the same time, still neither of these .vessels ever made so rapid a return passage. The Prince Alfred's runs on the coast have been equally good, for although at times she has experienced heavy weather, she has always been punctual. Having proved herself a fast boat, und one that can be depended upon, wo have much pleasure in recording her merits. We are informed that on her return to Sydney she will go on tho slip, preparatory to her relieving the Airedale on the coast for one month, at the expiration of which thno, one of the Company's new boats — the Phoebe — under the command of Capt Kennedy, will relieve her and take up the coastal station permanently iv lieu of tho Airedale. The Phoobe may bo expected from Sydney in July: The Prince Alfred leaves lor Lyttelton this afternoon. The barque Empress of India, Capt Wilkin, arrived in this harbor on Tuesday morning last, after a passage of 14 hours. We understand that .Capt Wilkin intends placing his vessel in the cattle trade, for which she is particularly well adapted from her great beam, height between decks, depth of hold, and flat flooring, as well as her sailing qualities. She is consigned to Messrs. W. and G. Turnbull & Co. Wo have been requested to publish the following affidavit in reply to a letter which appeai-ed in tho Otago Daily Times, of the 24th April, 1863, It is signed by the officers and crow of the barque Empress of India, and iB a complete refutation of tho libel contained hi the letter bearing the signature of " Neptune," which appeared in that journal:-— " H.M. Customs, Picton, New Zealand, "Mayi, 1563. "We, tho undersigned, part of the crow of tho Empress of India, having read a letter published in the Otago Daily Times, of the 24th April, 1863, signed Neptune a copy of which letter is attached, hereby declare as follows : — Tnat the charge contained in thcsaidletter of the Captain leaving tho vessel with his wife, child, second mate, and two handii and telling tho crew to get the pinnace from the skids and leavo the ship is untrue ; in so far as, that he tho said Captain Wilkin got into the gig after having seen the ship brought up with her anchors, solely for tho purpose of placing his wife and child in safety ; that he then returned on board leaving the gig in charge of the Becond mate ; that ho the Baid Captain Wilkin did not tell the crew to leave tho ship ; that tho pinnace was ordered to be cleared away only for tho purpose of being in readiness to run out kedge anchor if required. As far as superhuman efforts are concerned, wo hereby declare that great credit iB duo to Captain Wilkin for the able manner and coolness in which the orders were given by him to get the ship out of danger ; and wo consider that in carrying out his orders we were enabled to save the ship with only the loss of two anchors.
