THE "Nothing extenuate; Nor Bet down aught in malice." TUESDAY MORNING, 28th APRIL. LATEST NEWS FROM THE NORTH.
The arrival of tbe Lady Bird, last night, ban placed us in possession of dates from Auckland to the 22nd inst. We have also received a copy of tbe Taranaki Herald of tbe 18lh inst.
The intelligence fiom Tavanaki is unimport ant, and the Herald complains that at ibe present moment there is do difference between the state of affairs now and two months ago.
Speaking of tbe Natives it cays: —
" At the present moment they are digging riflo pita and fortifying themselves at Wairau, their pah on theouterspur of the hills overTataraimaka ; and there is very good reason to believe that there aro, armed men keeping guard at the 'gate,' not many yards distant from the southern boundary of.the hlock."
As far as events go ererything is quiet. The following summary iur the previous week, is from the Herald of the 18th :—
Nothing of particular interest has occurred during the week. On Tuesday last the Loan Bill; of the Provincial Government for £50,000 received his Kxcellency's assent after a fortnight n deliberation, and wo presume sums in cash or debentures will shortly be paid to the claimant's for compensation. The natives, we believe, still keep aloof, and we have heard of no communi
=cation with them on the part of his Excellency. ■3-At Tataraimaka, the O7th have completed the redoubt on Bayly's farm (named St. George's Jledoubt) and have constructed another on the Bite of. an old, fllaori pa, which is called Mount , strong : natural position on a .']in>'aU'pr,pD(»o,ntqry which commands the first-named vigilance is maintained at these redoubts, now under the command of Major Logan, 07th regiment,/ecently from Wangonui,
Colonel Warre, C.8., now commanding in town.- The whole of the 57th are now on outpost duty; the 65th and a part of the 70th doing duty in barracks and at the blockhouses. On Monday, H.M.s.s. Eclipse, Commander Mayno, arrived from Auckland, and returned to Manakau on Tuesday. Tins vessel relieves the Harrier, which has gone to Sydney for repairs. The General returned from Tataraimaka on Monday, and has since remained in town, occasionally visiting the outposts. The Mounted Artillery, under Captain Mercer, R.A., have also returned to town, leaving only the 57th at Tataraimaka.
The English Mail had not arrived at Auckland at the time of the Lady Bird's departure, The Southern Cross of the 2lst inst., says: — "The English Mail for per Claud Hamilton from Sydney is due heve to morrow.' The Auckland intelligence is unimportant.
