2. What steps do you intend to take to secure us quiet possession, now or hereafter ? 3. How long do you intend to exert a pressure on us to remain in the province, by withholding: the compensation voted by the Assembly, should the inteiests of the colony require the process of re-instatement to be slower than it would he if TaranAki only was concerned ? 4. When the date thus fixed has expired, will you purchase our lauds, or in what other way will you then enable us to establish ourselves elsewhere ? 5. Ought not the£2oo,ooo voted by the Assembly to be spent in compensation, and under the circumstances in which it was voted, are you justified in appropriating it to other pur poses than those of liquidating the actual losses of the settlers* In a letter fiom Mr Domett to the Superintendent, it is stated that the Attorney General has ad vised that no part of the £200,000 can be legally applied in giving compensation for past losses, but that as it was clearly the intention of the Legislature that it should be so applied, Mr Domett adds that it will be so applied accordingly. From Auckland there are news of some serious acts of aggression in Waikato— the pillaging of Mr Gorst's printing office, and the taking possession of the timber intended for a Court House and SchouJ, which was building by the Governor at the request of the chief Te Where One story says that the carpenters employed by the Government are in "durance vile," but this is no doubt an exaggeration. It is pretty certain, however, that the stopping of this Court House, &c, is in part owing to some pukeha Maories having assured the Natives that the building was intended fora stockade. With this, we receive information which shows how discordant are the elements that compose the King party. Thompson, the King maker and virtual King, has iieen fined £1000 by a Southern Runanga for interfeiing about Tataraimaka. " The proceedings (says a letter from Auckland in the Taranaki Herald) were duly notified to the Kinp- naker, who thereupon flared up and sent back a message to the Runanga that they might go to the devil, as he would see them hanged first before he submitted to their decision ! There is in this an appearance of discord which, if properly worked up, might play " old gooseberry " with the King faction, and assist it in tumbling to pieces. What the upshot of this "timber event" will be is difficult to say, but if His Excellency had been in their neighbourhood, he would have " chaffed" them so frightfully that they would have dropped their sticks as if they were hot embers."
