To the Editor of the Wellington Independent. Sib, — In your report of the Criminal Sittings of tho Supreme Court, on the 17th instant, you make me state in my evidence that Private M. Bent] 57th Eegt., who was tried and convicted for felony " hod been transferred to the 14th Eegt" What I stated was that " he was attached to the detachment of the 14th Regt. at Wellington ;" a very different thing from being transferred to it. Private Bent was discharged from gaol on the Ist December 1862, and was necessarily attached to the detachment here, until he could be sent to his own Kegt. While waiting for an opportunity for transmia. sion to Wanganuihe committed a military offence for which he was confined in the military prison, from which he had been discharged but a few days when he was apprehended for felony. I wish you would be so good as to insert this in \ your paper, as the 14th Kegt. are given credit in Wellington for having enough bad characters of their own, without having the blackguards of other regiments attributed to them. — I have the honor to be, sir, your obedient servant, J. T. Willis, Lieutenant 2nd Bat. 14th Regt., Aoting Adjutant. Mount Cook Barracks, Wellington, March 20th, 1863.
