Iron Masts for Ships.— > Ca ptain Cowper Coles, or Southsea, whose inventions in shields for ships of war are well known, has just patented an improvement in iron masts, suitable for ships of war as well as iron vessels. The masts are constructed of a central and two side tubes of iron or steel. The tubes pass through and are keyed to the decks, the central tube being canned in ia direct line, while the two side tubes extend from the central tubes at their bases, and are carried up at an incline till they unite with the central tube at, or near the upper part. The central tube is con-, tinued upwards to form the topmast, or aseparate tube is fitted thereto. The masts become as it were sejf-supporting, and shrouds and other supporting rigging aredispensed with,—' Mechanics' Magwine.' .s . „ •
