PERSONAL.

In our issue of the 14th inst., appeared a letter from Mr William Colenso, in which, while alluding to an article entitled " Mr Colenso on the Scotch," be imputed its authorship to Mr Fox ia the followiug terms, viz :—

Or. am Ito adopt the opinion of some here, — that, seeing Sometimes an able man of the late ministry (as it is reported) writes articles for your journal, that that gentleman has once more tried his hatid against an old political opponent.

As on every previous occasiou when dealing with statements or imputations of a similar kind, we emphatically denied tbe present To that denial on our part, Mr Fox in the following letter, now adds his.

,To the Editor of the Wellington Independent.

Siu.— l perceive by your paper of the 14th insfc., that, notwithstanding previous denials by you, there are persons who will persist in attributing to me the authorship of your articles. 1 should not have considered it necessary to deny it myself, were it not that I have Been some very rash assertions in some of the papers of the colony, of change of opinion on the Native question, based upon no other ground than the imagined authorship of tho articles referred to. Perhaps it will put a stop to the unfounded assertions of authorship, and still more unfounded inference of change of opinion on my part, if I request you to inform your readers, that since I left Wellington at the close of the Assembly in September last, I .have not written or contributed, a single line in or to any newspaper whatever. And I think I might safely say that, for the last five years, during which I have been living in tho country, or holding office in the General Government, I have not written a dozen articles in all, or any, of the colonial papers. It is hard on _ the gentlemen who may have written the able articles referred to, to be robbed of tho credit due to them; and it is unfair to me that I should be held responsible for opinions not my own, without the smallest particle of evidence of their being mine. I remain, Sir,

Your most obedient Borvant. William Fox.

Rangitikei, 18th Feb., 1863.
